This recipe is suitable for the whole family from 6 months old, and provides a complete meal for babies and toddlers. Plus, you can even freeze a batch for quick weeknight meals!

What makes these sweet potato and black bean patties so good for your baby?
These patties are a great finger food and also a complete meal for babies and toddlers. They include an iron-rich food (black beans), high calorie food (sweet potatoes, olive oil), and a vegetables (sweet potatoes, black beans, onions).
Sweet potatoes are one of the most versatile and nutritious foods. They are an excellent source of vitamin A and beta-carotene, which is a precursor of vitamin A. Vitamin A is essential for a babyâs growth and vision.
Black beans also provide key nutrients for a growing child, including protein, fiber, folate, magnesium, iron, and potassium. This plant-based protein and iron-rich food can be a valuable addition to your babyâs diet, especially in aiding in the prevention of iron-deficiency anemia.

Course: Lunch/Dinner Prep: 25 min Cook: 12-16 min Servings: 14-16 patties
Ingredients
Olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 small onion, chopped
2 cups cooked black beans
1 small sweet potato, peeled, cooked
2 tbsp fresh cilantro/coriander, chopped
Preparation Steps
1. Heat a little olive oil in a frying pan and saute the onion and garlic until tender.
2. In a bowl, mash together the cooked black beans, garlic, onion and sweet potato. Stir in the cilantro. Mold mixture into little burgers (patties) of a size of your choosing and refrigerate for 1 hour. If your mixture seems to be too soft, you could try binding it with some whole wheat bread crumbs, oat flour, or baby cereal.
3. Place patties on a greased baking sheet and spray it with a little olive oil or other cooking spray. Place under the grill/broiler and cook for 6 to 8 mins until golden, then turn and repeat on the other side. Another option is to cook mini burgers on top of the stove by heating a skillet, adding a little oil, then cooking patties for 6-8 minutes on each side. Cool to a safe temperature and serve to baby.
Notes
Suitable: for the whole family from 6 months old.
Age up: If you offer this recipe to an older child (12+months) or an adult you may add a little salt to your taste. Salt is very high in sodium, and for this reason, we recommend waiting until baby is 12+ months to introduce it into their diet.
Flavor up & Boost nutrition: Try adding any of these toppings:
Greek yogurt or sour cream
Ricotta
Veggie loaded dips
Ketchup or Ranch - if your child loves these condiments and are hesitant about trying new foods, like these patties, serving them alongside their beloved foods is a great way to encourage them to try new/disliked foods.
Involving your children:
Under 6+ months: have them watch you prepare; show them how you mash the sweet potatoes and black beans together. Tell them the names of the ingredients as you add them to help build baby's vocabulary. Show them how you shape the mixture into the little patties.
18+ months: show them how to and let them try to chop onions with a kids safe plastic knife; show them how to and let them try to mash the sweet potatoes and black beans together. â Focus on offering single ingredient foods or very simple recipes (1-3 ingredients) at the early stages - the first 1-2 months of starting solids. You may offer more elaborated recipes on a more occasional basis for babies beginning to eat. This will help your baby get familiar with the natural taste of foods but still getting it "pimped-up" in recipes every once in a while. It will also allow you to expose your baby to a few different foods, and make it easier for you to rule out some possible food allergies or intolerance before you start offering preparations with several ingredients regularly.
